More Midwives

Support Overdue front cover
The NFWI has launched a campaign for More Midwives campaign after a resolution on the employment of more midwives was passed at the 2012 AGM with a 96% majority.
Read about our research
Support Overdue details the state of maternity care today.
Take Action now
What you can do to help the campaign, competition winners and useful resources.
There is a shortage of midwives in the UK, resulting in fragmented, rushed care and extra demands on maternity services.Midwives are facing increasing pressure with chronic staff shortages, the ongoing baby boom and increasing numbers of complications in pregnancy. Combined, these challenges are making it harder to deliver a high standard of care to women and their children and mean that despite increases in the number of NHS midwives, maternity units are still short staffed.

To support ACWW’s commitment to promote the use of re-usable shopping bags, we’re asking every WI in Avon Federation to make a shopping bag using only recycled materials.  The bag should be no larger than 16 in x 14 in (40.5 cm x 30.5 cm), excluding handles.
Please bring your bag to the Federation Spring Meeting in the Winter Gardens, Weston-super-Mare on 27 March 2013 where they will be displayed and judged.
So fire up your imagination – can’t wait to see the end results!

NEW! WI Centenary Fruit Cake Competition

NEW! WI Centenary Fruit Cake Competition

The WI has a reputation for home baking that is second to none and WI teas are legendary. More than anyone, WI members appreciate the importance of creating and recording special recipes for others to pass onto the next generation, or simply share and enjoy over a cup of tea!

Fruit Cake Competition

The NFWI Education Committee is giving members the opportunity to share their fruit cake recipes nationally and win the chance to have their recipe commercially produced and served at the WI Centenary AGM in 2015.
To find out more about the competition and how to take part, please visit the WI Moodle.
This competition is open to WI members only.

NEW! Photographic Competition

NEW! Photographic Competition

In 2005, the Federation Support Committee hosted a photography competition 'Women'; the response was overwhelming and all entries demonstrated a high level of photographic skill, imagination and interpretation of theme.
To encourage this wonderful talent, members are now being given the chance to enter a new competition by submitting an entry based on the theme 'Inspirational Women'.
Photographic Competition
Photographs must be based on the theme 'Inspirational Women' and may be entered under two categories: 1) Colour and 2) Black and White.
Entrants must send their work to their federation office for initial judging, federations may then select up to three entries per class to go forward for national judging.  Closing date for federation entries: Monday 16 September 2013.
For a full schedule, or to find out more about the competition, please contact your Federation Secretary, visit the Moodle or contact Helen Neal at the NFWI Unit.

Dear Walkers
We are planning to have our next walk on either the 1st or 8th of March. This walk will be in and around Fyne Court and hopefully we will see the snowdrops. It is a longer walk, about 6 miles. Of course there is involvement with a very nice pub. So this will mean setting off at 9.30 and eating at about 1.30
I have not tried this walk out yet and so I may have other ideas. At this stage can I have your views on whether you would like such a long walk and which of the two dates would suit?
Thanks Veronica

Lunch/Supper Club

At our January meeting a list went round asking members if they would like to join a lunch or evening (or both) Supper club if you missed the meeting or the list can you let us know if you would be intrested and if so in which ?

We will then look to sort out groups of a maximum of 20 ladies to meet every six weeks starting in March to try out different venues for a fixed price three course meal at a maximum cost of £20 a head (not including drinks which would be payable individually)

Each time a different member of the group would be responsible for arranging the next meal - (dont let this put you off as wouldnt be compulsory)

So far the list proved to be very popular so we are also looking for volunteers to arrange the first supper/lunch club meals and lead on passing on the role etc ...... so please let us know if you would like to do this as we only have Tracy Heppenstall at the moment and I dont think she can eat out and arrange all of the groups !!

Email us at bleadonwi@hotmail.co.uk or see a committee member
