WOW - Bleadon WI Ball Raised Over £10,000

Bleadon WI Ball

In the summer this year Bleadon WI decided to look to carry out a fund raising event to raise money for a local charity to follow on from the great success of the Bleadon WI Calendar in 2012

A subcommittee was set up with nine keen members and led by our President Tracy Heppenstall  it was decided to take on the ambitious project of hosting a Bleadon Ball hosted by Bleadon WI

A local charity was chosen, Weston Hospice Care and a booking was made for Batch Country House in Lympsham, a great menu was chosen and along with local designer Jon Hooper, Bloke on His Own, the very beautiful tickets and posters were printed

No-one expected the response to be so amazing and within weeks nearly 300 tickets were sold and the committee went about organising the raffle and auction.

Local businesses, Bleadon WI members, and members of the community did us proud with amazing auction and raffle prizes On the night we had a very successful auction which saw 14 lots including a donkey, Jimmy Choo Handbag and meals in local restaurants.

The night was a great success with good food, dancing to local band Doctor Chocolate, Photographs by Scott at Dot Photography.

Everyone had an excellent time and unbelievably we smashed our target and raised over £10,000 for Weston Hospice Care.

Bleadon WI would like to thank everyone for their support

Lights out

The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.
Sir Edward Grey, Foreign Secretary, uttered these words on the eve of Britain officially entered the First World War. Exactly 100 years later we are inviting millions of individuals, households and companies to join together in a national moment of reflection.

We're encouraging everyone in the UK to turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm on 4 August 2014 – leaving only a single light or candle for this symbolic act of reflection and hope.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Fairtrade Fortnight

Fairtrade Fortnight provides a great opportunity to take a look at the products that we buy and think about who produces them.
Stick with Foncho logo
During Fairtrade Fortnight (24 February – 9 March) campaigners up and down the country celebrate the difference Fairtrade makes to the lives of farmers who grow the products we enjoy in the UK.  Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms.
This year's event will see the launch of a dedicated campaign aiming to bring about a landmark change in the banana industry. In the last 10 years, a bitter price war has seen the UK supermarket sector almost halve the shelf price of loose bananas while the cost of producing them has doubled. This is trapping many of the farmers and workers who grow them in poverty. Whilst Fairtrade provides a vital safety net for some banana farmers and workers, many still suffer.  The WI is backing the campaign for change.
