Age UK Volunteering Opportunity

Age UK Somerset are looking to train Tai Chi for Health leaders

Age UK are looking to train volunteers across the County in Somerset and North Somerset and support successful candidates to run classes in their Community on behalf of Age UK Somerset.

No previous experience is required although it would be an advantage, however, it would suit someone who has experienced Tai Chi or some form of exercise, Yoga or even amateur dramatics experience.  In return for the training a willingness to teach a regular class once a week, with their full support and supervision.

The form is called Shibashi and means 18 in Chinese.  It is easy to learn and the effects are amazing, helping to reduce Blood Pressure, improve balance, relaxes and improves feelings of wellbeing and the movements are slow and inclusive.

Being a volunteer with Age UK Somerset is very rewarding, as well as benefitting others it will benefit you too.  The classes are very sociable.  So if you fancy it, do get in touch with dianne.ramsay@ageuksomerst.org.uk or ring 01823 345626.

The Bleadon Belles, winners of the NFWI Centenary Singing for Joy Competition, were delighted to be invited to sing at the inaugural meeting of the new Avon Wood Group, hosted by Saltford Afternoon WI on 21st June 2016 at Saltford Hall.  Starting with a rousing rendition of Jerusalem by both choir and audience, the choir interspersed songs with a history of their rapid journey from “Let’s start a choir!” to the Royal Albert Hall.  Choirmaster Andrew King conducted and they were accompanied by pianist Matthew Tilke.  The choir were made to feel very welcome and enjoyed staying on to the meeting which was very well supported.

CSGC Living Memory Project

The NFWI has been contacted by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) to invite WIs to get involved in its new Living Memory project which is running throughout Summer and Autumn 2016.  The Living Memory project is offering funding and resources to community groups to enable them to visit and remember those buried in local sites in the UK throughout the centenary of the Somme from 1July – 18 November 2016.

Of the 300,000 war graves or commemorations that are cared for by the CWGC here in the UK 2,000 belong to women who died while serving in the two World Wars. The CWGC has produced resources to help WIs identify a CWGC site near them, do some research about some of those buried in that site and stage a commemorative event – in their own way and reflecting their own interests – to remember those who lost their lives in the 141 days of the Somme.

If you are interested in this project please let Bleadon WI know.

The Bleadon Belles in Concert with the Worle Wind Band

The Bleadon Belles had a fantastic night on Saturday 21st May.  They were the guests of the amazing Worle Wind Band at their Concert at Christ Church, Weston-super-Mare.  The choir sang a selection of old and new songs, directed by Choirmaster Andy King and accompanied by Richard Lennox.  As a finale they joined the band with a beautiful version of Paul Mealor’s 'Wherever You Are', together with soprano Bev King, and a medley of Andrew Lloyd Webber songs which raised the roof and received a standing ovation!

Special thanks to Bleadon Village Market volunteers Rachel and Sheena, who together with Sandie from the Bleadon Players, did a fantastic job serving tea, coffee and cake in the interval.

All profits from the concert will be going to the WI’s charity this year: the Diamond Jubilee Scanner Appeal for Weston Hospital.  A big thank you to those members who donated cake.
