Bleadon Belles Sing at the Inaugural Meeting of the new Avon Wood Group

The Bleadon Belles, winners of the NFWI Centenary Singing for Joy Competition, were delighted to be invited to sing at the inaugural meeting of the new Avon Wood Group, hosted by Saltford Afternoon WI on 21st June 2016 at Saltford Hall.  Starting with a rousing rendition of Jerusalem by both choir and audience, the choir interspersed songs with a history of their rapid journey from “Let’s start a choir!” to the Royal Albert Hall.  Choirmaster Andrew King conducted and they were accompanied by pianist Matthew Tilke.  The choir were made to feel very welcome and enjoyed staying on to the meeting which was very well supported.

CSGC Living Memory Project

The NFWI has been contacted by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) to invite WIs to get involved in its new Living Memory project which is running throughout Summer and Autumn 2016.  The Living Memory project is offering funding and resources to community groups to enable them to visit and remember those buried in local sites in the UK throughout the centenary of the Somme from 1July – 18 November 2016.

Of the 300,000 war graves or commemorations that are cared for by the CWGC here in the UK 2,000 belong to women who died while serving in the two World Wars. The CWGC has produced resources to help WIs identify a CWGC site near them, do some research about some of those buried in that site and stage a commemorative event – in their own way and reflecting their own interests – to remember those who lost their lives in the 141 days of the Somme.

If you are interested in this project please let Bleadon WI know.

Thank you for helping

Farrington Gurney WI have passed on their thanks to all who helped try to break 2GWr's in memory of Emma Welch. 31,082 daises were counted on the stage and they can confirm that 428 people is the most ever to crochet at the same time in the Forum.

Unfortunately they did not manage to achieve the largest number of people but the event will hopefully raise vital funds for Brain Tumour research over the coming months.
